Summary List Placement

Morgan Stanley has looked outside the bank to tap a new executive heading up the bank's information security, Insider has learned.

Alonzo Ellis, currently Vanguard's chief information security officer, will join Morgan Stanley in September as the firm's global chief information security officer, according to an internal memo sent Thursday that was viewed by Insider.

Ellis will report to Katherine Wetmur, who heads up technology and operations risk and firm resilience at the bank and penned the memo. His responsibilities will also include acting as a senior adviser and cybersecurity crisis manager.

Ellis has spent more than eight years at Vanguard, leading the asset management giant's enterprise security and fraud practice before ultimately helming Vanguard's information security. He's spent more than 20 years working at the intersection of information security and finance, including spending three years at Citigroup that included time onsite in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore, and London, according to his LinkedIn.

Ellis will succeed Gerard Brady, a 16-year veteran of Morgan Stanley who is retiring. Brady will advise the bank post-retirement as a senior advisor for technology, a spokesperson for the bank said.

The hiring comes as Morgan Stanley continues to hire and promote from within in an ambitious push to reshape its broader tech strategy around the cloud and cybersecurity.

Last September, Morgan Stanley announced it had promoted Wetmur. Sigal Zarmi, the firm's head of transformation, was tapped to replace Wetmur as international CIO.

In February, the bank named its first ever head of cloud and architecture when it promoted long-time Morgan Stanley tech exec Bobby Gilja. The same month, Morgan Stanley announced that Peter Akwaboah was tapped as COO of its tech and operations division.

In June, meanwhile, Rob Rooney, Morgan Stanley's head of tech, operations, and firm resilience, detailed to Insider the bank's growing partnership with Microsoft Azure.
